“Tuck Everlasting” by Natalie Babbitt is one of the most
beloved American novels. It’s a story about a young girl named Winnie. She was
tired of her old life and left home to find adventure. As she wondered around
in the woods she met a boy named Jesse Tuck, who seemed normal. But to her surprise
he and his family are immortal. As the story progresses and Winnie gets to know
Jesse’s family, she also changes. As Winnie finally breaks free from her boring
and strict life, and then gets to know the Tucks, she learns to face the
consequences and sacrifices to protect them.
For example, in the beginning of the book, Winnie was tired
of being constantly looked over and just wanted to venture. As she left she
never realized what she did was selfish. She left her family behind in grief.
But throughout the story she gets to know the Tucks, and as trouble comes along
she does protect them. So this leads me to the conclusion that the Tucks
affected her (positively). So as she scarifies, she must of realized that her
family loves her, and that she must sacrifice for them, because she returned
home at the end.
All in all, in most books the main character has a change of
mind, behavior, or look. In this case Winnie has changed into a more considerate,
caring person. I think our teenage years are our realistic change of mind into
great and successful adults we one day will become.
